Bachelor of Science in Perfusion Technology

Bachelor of Science in Perfusion Technology is a four-year programme that prepares students to operate heart-lung machines and support patients during open-heart surgery and other procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.

Course Description

Bachelor of Science in Perfusion Technology is a four-year programme that prepares students to operate heart-lung machines and support patients during open-heart surgery and other procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. The curriculum includes cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, perfusion physics, extracorporeal circulation, heart-lung machine operation, oxygenators, blood-gas management, anticoagulation management, myocardial protection, ECMO support, and patient monitoring. Students learn to work closely with cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and critical-care teams.

Internships
Students complete supervised training in cardiac surgery theatres, perfusion departments, cardiac ICUs, ECMO units, and transplant centres. Internship learning includes heart-lung machine preparation, priming, oxygenator setup, anticoagulation monitoring, blood-gas interpretation, cardiopulmonary bypass support, ECMO assistance, and emergency protocols. Training is typically provided in cardiac hospitals and tertiary-care centres.

Jobs / Scope in Government & Law Enforcement
Graduates can apply for perfusionist, cardiac perfusion technologist, and clinical perfusion assistant posts in government cardiac hospitals, medical colleges, defence hospitals, and state health departments. Opportunities may exist in transplant centres, trauma-care units, and emergency medical services requiring advanced life-support technology. The role is specialised and important in public cardiac-surgery and critical-care programmes.

Jobs / Scope in Healthcare & Hospitals
Graduates work as perfusionists, clinical perfusionists, ECMO specialists, cardiac-surgery support technologists, and perfusion-team coordinators. Employers include cardiac hospitals, heart institutes, transplant centres, multi-speciality hospitals, and medical-device companies.

Career Prospects
Career progression includes senior perfusionist, chief perfusionist, ECMO coordinator, clinical educator, and perfusion-service manager. Higher study options include M.Sc. Perfusion Technology, cardiac-care management, and clinical research. Demand is linked to the growth of cardiac surgery, heart transplantation, ECMO services, and advanced critical-care facilities.
