Courses
Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS)
Course Description
Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) is a four-year professional programme that trains students to perform accurate diagnostic investigations using blood, urine, tissue, and other body samples. The curriculum covers haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, immunology, blood banking, histopathology, cytology, molecular diagnostics, laboratory management, quality control, and biosafety. Students develop practical competence in operating automated analysers, microscopy, specimen processing, infection control, and laboratory information systems. The programme prepares graduates to support doctors in disease detection, monitoring, treatment decisions, and public-health screening.
Internships
Students undergo hospital and diagnostic-laboratory training in clinical biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, pathology, blood bank, molecular biology, and quality assurance departments. Internships include sample collection, specimen handling, instrument operation, test reporting, quality-control documentation, and infection-control practices. Training may be arranged in multi-speciality hospitals, NABL-accredited laboratories, diagnostic chains, blood banks, research laboratories, and public-health laboratories.
Jobs / Scope in Government & Law Enforcement
Graduates can apply for laboratory technician, scientific assistant, laboratory assistant, blood-bank technician, and public-health laboratory roles in government hospitals, medical colleges, district laboratories, ESIC, Railways, defence medical services, and state health departments. Forensic science laboratories, police departments, and law-enforcement agencies may require laboratory professionals for biological evidence examination, toxicology, DNA-related support work, and crime-scene sample processing, subject to role-specific recruitment rules. Opportunities also exist in disease-surveillance programmes, epidemic-control units, food and drug testing laboratories, and environmental/public-health agencies.
Jobs / Scope in Healthcare & Hospitals
B.MLS graduates work as medical laboratory technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, phlebotomists, blood-bank technologists, histopathology technicians, microbiology technologists, molecular-diagnostic technologists, and laboratory quality officers. Employment settings include hospitals, ICU-supported diagnostic units, pathology laboratories, diagnostic chains, cancer centres, fertility clinics, research laboratories, biotechnology companies, and home-collection diagnostic services.
Career Prospects
Career growth can lead to senior technologist, laboratory supervisor, laboratory manager, quality manager, LIS coordinator, research associate, field application specialist, and academic roles after higher studies. Postgraduate options include M.MLS, M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, M.Sc. Microbiology, M.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. Forensic Science, and public-health programmes. The demand for laboratory professionals is strong because diagnostics are central to modern patient care, disease surveillance, and preventive healthcare.
