Master of Optometry (M.Optom)
Course Description
Master of Optometry (M.Optom) is a two-year postgraduate programme that provides advanced training in clinical optometry, ocular disease management, contact lenses, vision science, low-vision rehabilitation, and optometric research. The curriculum includes advanced refraction, binocular vision disorders, paediatric optometry, neuro-optometry, ocular diagnostics, contact-lens complications, geriatric vision care, practice management, epidemiology, and research methodology. Graduates are prepared for specialised clinical roles, leadership positions, and academic careers.
Internships
Students complete advanced clinical postings in specialty eye hospitals, contact-lens clinics, low-vision centres, paediatric optometry units, neuro-ophthalmology departments, and vision-science research laboratories. Training includes complex refraction, advanced diagnostic procedures, specialty contact-lens fitting, vision therapy, ocular-disease screening, clinical case discussions, and research projects. Students may also participate in community eye-health programmes and vision-screening camps.
Jobs / Scope in Government & Law Enforcement
M.Optom graduates can apply for senior optometrist, vision-care consultant, eye-health programme officer, and clinical instructor roles in government eye hospitals, medical colleges, district health services, and national blindness-prevention programmes. They can support police, defence, railway, and industrial vision-standard assessments. Opportunities also exist in school eye-health programmes, community vision screening, and public-health eye-care planning.
Jobs / Scope in Healthcare & Hospitals
Graduates work as senior optometrists, contact-lens specialists, low-vision consultants, paediatric optometrists, vision-therapy specialists, clinical optometry educators, and eye-care centre managers. Employers include tertiary eye hospitals, ophthalmology chains, optical retail companies, lens manufacturers, research organisations, and tele-optometry platforms.
